Why did he recommend it? If there were benefits to you, *he* should
have told you what they were. Without that explanation of benefits,
his recommendation is meaningless.
I can't tell you whether it's advisable for *you*, because I know
nothing about how you use your computer and what you use it for. But I
can tell you that for the vast majority of home users, it would be a
complete waste of time and money. XP Home and Professional are
identical except that Professional includes a few features (mostly
related to security and networking) missing from Home. Most home users
don't need and would never use these extra features and will see
absolutely *no* benefits by upgrading.

Also note another point, not included in any of the above:
Professional allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only
five.
