Has it ever worked?

Devices like mouse, flash memory, etc nearly always work without
drivers, but I've yet to see a camera that did so.

Some devices require that you install the drivers *before* you plug the
device in. Some are so insistent on this that it seems likely that the
device won't ever work properly if you fail to heed this advice.

Did you follow the instructions for adding the device drivers?
