Click on control panel icon
click on system icon
click "hardware" tab
click "device manager" button
click on "view" menu item...show hidden devices
scroll down, double-click on "storage volumes"
Right click on any drive with a letter and choose "Update driver" and
let it search the internet (this time I had two, it didn't work after
doing just one, or maybe it's because I also restarted after doing the
second one).

I have had this problem suddenly occur a week or so ago. I use Acronis 11 and have had it installed for a long time, so I did not think it was related to that.
I followed the quoted procedure, but instead of "updating the drivers" I clicked on the Uninstall icon for each volume listed. Windows rebooted, rebuilt its database, wanted to reboot again so I did.
The problem disappeared and everything works fine again.
I found the quoted fix on many forums and chose this one to add my experience. Hope this helps someone and other forums also pick it up.
