It sounds as if you were advised to try a virtual machine solution.
The two free ones of which I'm aware are Microsoft's VirtualPC 2007

(
http://www.virtualbox.org/).
NOTE: Microsoft does not support the use of VirtualPC 2007 on Vista
Home editions, but several people have reported that it works. Your
results may vary.
