Can the ribbon be brought back without closing Excel? (Is it merely
minimized?)

1. Click Customize Quick Access Toolbar (Small downward pointing arrow to
the right of the Microsoft Office Button - top left corner.)
2. In the list, click Minimize the Ribbon.

You might try 'cycling it' (check it, uncheck it, check it)...
