Windows XP startup sound stutters and cracks

I'm running Windows XP with an Nvidia 8600 video card. When I boot the
machine, the windows startup sound stutters and cracks - not smooth. Once
the machine is booted, sounds work fine -this happens on the startup only.
I've disabled services and run diagnostic set up but no difference. Does
anyone know the cause?
