can't get on internet with windows xp

i have just reinstall win xp home on my computer but i can not connect to
internet. when i looked in hardware device manager there was no network
adaptors. my xp cd is about 6years old. if i install service pack 3 will this
help. if so is there anyway i can download onto my laptop and then transfer
it to my computer. my laptop is vista. thanks
