Serious concern about time changing.

Hello-

This may seem odd, but here's what's happening. First off, I have a customer
who has 7 PC's, at least 3 of them are COMPQ computers, and the others are
DELL's and ANTEC computer. Here's what is happening...

First off, Windows SBS 2000 is what each of these PC's are attached too,
only (1) one of them is newer than the others. (this one is fine) what is
happening is that all of the computers loses the TIME! It doesn't matter if
it's one hour ahead or past... in fact it's both!

They constantly lose the proper time. Can anyone tell me is this an XP issue
with Computer & Dell computers?

As for the newest one, I built that one for him and it keeps the time
without any problems. Can you advise on what might be the (issue) problem?

Is this XP in general that is causing the issue? If you are asking me if SP2
is on them, I believe they are... although I can confirm this. But, I am open
to any suggestions or comments as to what is causng this problem.

Are some of the computers synchronizing their time with the server? Do you
have an NTP server on the network? While some computers have been known to
have motherboard-related time issues (IIRC a particular Dell model was
plagued with this a while back), it is unlikely that 7 computers of
different makes/models are all coming down with the same hardware issue. It
is more likely something to do with synchronizing (or not) to an NTP
server.

Hi Malke-

No, unfortunately there hasn't been a setup with NTP server, unless SBS
Windows Server does this automatically?????!!!??? ( I have very little
knowledge of SBS 2000 compared to SBS 2003). I just know that it is
happening on the Dell, and Compaq computers... They are older than 3 years,
not sure if you think the batteries on them are stopping?!?!

Tell me, any way to find out if NTP server is loaded, and if so how to
manage or stop it from doing this?

My customer needs the time to be correct, he has a TIME CLOCK for his
employees to CLOCK in, etc... etc, it's imperative to find out where the
problem resides and fix this issue.

Any advice would be most appreicated as to where to find NTP server? If by
chance it isn't installed or doing this, any other idea what might be the
reason for the time change?

ok, I found this whitepaper online which speaks about ISA (which I believe
is running on SBS 2000 Server), and I am wondering... by following these
procedures will it fix or resolve the issue of the time being changed?

It explains in a "step-by-step" article on how to configure Simple Network
Time Protocol (SNTP)... do you feel that if I used this procedure that the
time issue will/would be easily resolved?

I appreciate your immediate feedback on this, from you or anyone who might

I would definitely post your very excellent information to the SBS
newsgroup. SBS is a beast with its own rules and 1) I'm not expert with
SBS; 2) I've only worked with SBS 2003 anyway.

BTW, no it won't be the motherboard batteries because they only come into
play when the computer is off. If machines lose time after being turned off
then yes, look to the CMOS battery. But not if their time is off while on.
