Does Windows XP Home allow me to restore the previous version of an overwritten file?

I thought it was possible to go to older versions, but I don't
remember how.

After a virus infection, I had to reinstall windows. Fortunately my
internet explorer's well developed bookmark file was on a second
drive. Then I accidentally over-wrote the bookmark file with a much
reduced basic version.

Is there some way for me to recover a previous version?

No, there is nothing natively in XP Home that will allow you to do this. You
would need to restore the data from external backup.

XP itself won't help you.

However, there are many file-reeovery programs that might be able to get
some of them back, depending on how much disk activity has happened since
you had the accident.

CAUTION: Try to avoid writing to the disk with the erased/over-written
files. The more you use that disk, the lower the chances of getting the
file back.

Note: What you call "bookmarks" in Internet Explorer is usually a large
number of individual files of type *.URL, not one big file. Firefox's
bookmarks are stored in one file of type *.HTML.

The first version of Windows with this capability is Vista.
