XPS T450
Now that I got my new Dell xps 420 system, I would like to wipe my Windows
98se off my Dell XPS T450 and install XP and give it to my brother.
The specs are Dell Dimension XPS T450 MHz
Pentium III MiniTower Base with 512K Cache
384MB SDRAM Memory
6x max variable dvd-rom drive
13.6GBUltra ATA Hard Drive, 7200 rpm

Can I do that? Change it to an XP machine? Thanks. Ginny

Yes, you can do that without changing the old computer to XP.

The easy way would be to buy a USB enclosure for a 3.5 inch drive. Then,
you remove the drive from the old machine and install it into the enclosure.
Finally, you connect the USB enclosure to an available USB port. Now, copy
whatever you need.

Once through, remove the drive from the USB enclosure and reinstall it into
the old machine.

That 13.6 GB drive is barely big enough for XP. You may find that 384MB
isn't enough (depending on what programs your brother is running).

Is the copy of Windows XP you are proposing to install a Retail or OEM
version? You may encounter problems if it is OEM?

384 mb RAM is certainly capable of running XP but most user recommend
512 mb RAM for a satisfactory experience. It's all down to what
programmes are to be run. You need to watch what anti-virus and
anti-spyware software are installed. Norton or McAfee will cripple
performance on this machine.

A 450 mhz processor is also bottom end for Windows XP. If this is to be
a first computer for your brother then it is a good way to start but do
not let him spend money on the computer because the CPU processor will
negate any attempts to improve performance.

Hope this helps.
