Change your BIOS so that the CD drive is the preferred boot device.

NOTE: When you are really changing topic you should start your own thread.

Don`t think you can, it has to be installed onto the HDD.

Just put the CD in the drive and reboot the machine.
You may have to go into the BIOS and set the boot priority to boot from the
CD before the HDD.

....and then watch for a "Press any key to boot from CD" message that may
appear...

If you mean Microsoft Windows XP as you get it retail?
XP was not meant to run from a CD. It writes files and expects them to
be there on the boot disk. Oh I guess with enough effort you could
clone your C: drive to a CD then monkey with a hex editor and change
settings enough for the system to write to the C: drive for variable
data and read the rest of the OS from the CD, but I have a feeling the
effort needed and the hours consumed and the chance of success would be
extreme.

Ubuntu (Linux) was meant to do this. And there are others beyond that.

Sorry, it's not possible. Windows writes files to itself all the
time--to the registry and elsewhere. It could not do that if it were
on a CD-ROM.
