XP Automatic Updates Broken
I had to replace a broken hard drive on my HP Pavillion desktop and restore
with the recovery CD's. I had lots of problems but finally got it to restore
and work but now the XP Automatic Update process is broken. Every time it
tries to download and install a patch I get an error message "Some updated
could not be installed" and nothing is installed. Most of the patches I can
then go in and download and install manually OK but there are a few that will
not install that way either. Is there any way to reinstall the XP Automatic
Updates software to get this working correctly? I see that others have
suggested malware but for me this is not the case because it stopped working
immediately after a fresh restore with my recovery CD's. I was able to
manually download and install XP Service Pack 3 and most fixes that pop up
with the Automatic Updates window.

See if the information in this article helps. Note: While the title of the
article only mentions repair installation, it's been reported in these
newsgroups that the suggested fix may help when the issue occurs after a clean
installation.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

Good luck
