how does sign on screen knows how many emails i have unread?

i have a password set for login on my computer. when i start my computer and
get to this screen before anything has loaded the screen shows how many
emails i have unread. how does the computer know this and can i can which
email it is reading this from and can this be turned off so it doesn't know?

To turn off mail notification.
If you have Tweakui installed open it (Tweakui can be found in the
start menu) then go to Logon - Unread Mail and check "Apply setting to
all users".
