A rather nasty MSVDM bug

if you have virtual desktop manager power toy installed, and are running
Excel 2007 on one of the desktops, and switch to an alternate desktop, when
you return to your original desktop, the Ribbon completely disappears from
Excel! The spreadsheets are there, but the entire Ribbon has vanished

This does not happen with Word 2007, however.

I've had some other strage behavor with this power toy (for example,
Microsoft Money is active on all descktops, as well as various FrameMaker
dialogs), but this is the 1st time I've seen a virtual desktop bug as nasty
as this one!

Can the ribbon be brought back without closing Excel? (Is it merely
minimized?)

1. Click Customize Quick Access Toolbar (Small downward pointing arrow to
the right of the Microsoft Office Button - top left corner.)
2. In the list, click Minimize the Ribbon.

You might try 'cycling it' (check it, uncheck it, check it)...

It is not a question of the ribbon being minimized. Once I switch back to
the virtual desktop with Excel, there are no toolbars. There is nothing to
the right of the Microsoft Office button. There is NO Microsoft Office
Button! There are no menus. There is nothing but 3 buttons on the left of the
window that allow me to minimize, restore, and close the window.

Here is the best work-around I've found for this bug. It reloads the toolbar
with a hotkey registered with a macro. I can't take credit, it was
originally posted by a guest at pcreview.co.uk:

You need to re-read your
toolbar file. Since you can't access the file menu to do this, create a
macro to do it with a hot-key. My toolbar file is:
C:\Documents and Settings\SarahK\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\Excel11.xlb

Detailed instructions:
Tools->Macro->Record New Macro
In the dialog box:
under "store macro in" choose "Personal Macro Workbook"
under "Short-cut Key" enter a key of your choosing (say "m" for Menus)
Click "OK"
Record the macro:
File->Open
in the open dialog for "Files of type:" choose "Toolbars (*.xlb)"
open your toolbars file
Click the "Stop Recording" button on the Macro Recorder
When you exit Excel, be sure to save your Personal Macro workbook (hidden)
when asked

Now whenever you lose your toolbars and menu bar, simply hit your hotkey
(say Ctrl-M)

Thanks for the Hotkey work-around. This is a good temporary fix. Not sure I
can convince my colleagues this is ideal though. Is it out of the question
for Microsoft to fix their product, after all it's embarrassing that their
power tool doesn't work properly with their own software!

I've noticed this menu problem also occurs in Microsoft Access.

.... did anyone experience the bug, that ie windows close sometimes while you
are running another instance of ie in another desktop?

.... i also had problems using word on two virtual desktops

think, i will change to another virtual desktop solutions

this worked for me.. hope that someone at Microsoft actually spends some
time to fix it properly, fingers crossed!
