Is there any simple way of temporarily disabling this, or forcing a
write to disc?

What about?

ewfmgr c: -commitanddisable -live

Er... I don't know - that's why I'm asking :-)
However, if I do that and it works, does this undo it:
ewfmgr c: -commitandenable -live
