Safely remove hardware
I have a Full XP image and have the Safely Remove Hardware component
installed. The system detects when a USB stick is inserted and works fine
with it. But I never see the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray
like I do in regular XP Pro. Is there another component or primitive that I
need? I do see some other things in the system tray such as the speaker
Volume icon.

RE: Safely remove hardware

Probably the problem is about the USB Boot Mass Storage Device Update
component. If you are using Full XP 2007 by Sean Liming, this component is
automatically included by the FULL XP - System section. I think this is a
mistake, because the USB Boot Mass Storage Device Update component is useful
only if you are deploying a USB boot image. the USB Boot Mass Storage Device
Update contain a special version of the file USBSTOR.SYS, different from the
classical XP Professional version. See this article for more details:

Re: Safely remove hardware
Hi Larry. Unfortunately, the solution shown below will not address the
original question. As Francesco mentioned, the USB Boot components are
meant specifically to enable the system to boot from a USB device, and part
of this solution is to cause XPe to treat USB flash drives as non-removable
devices (normally they are always seen as removable, and thus are treated
differently from non-removable media). This doesn't have any impact on the
"Safely Remove Hardware" functionality, however.

There is a component named "Safely Remove Hardware Program", which should
bring in the necessary components to add the requested functionality to your
runtime.

Re: Safely remove hardware
Actually, Francesco's response was exactly correct. I did have the "Safely
Remove Hardware Program" component but as long as the "USB Mass Storage Device
Update" component was in the design I would never get the 'safely remove' icon
in the system tray. Once I built without it, the icon shows and works
correctly.

Re: Safely remove hardware
Ohhh, okay. I must have misunderstood the original question, then. I
apologize for the confusion. I was under the (apparently mistaken)
impression that the Safely Remove Hardware icon would always appear even if
there were no devices currently "stoppable", but on further review, it looks
like that doesn't happen.

Glad you got it resolved, then.
