Remote Assistance between XP and Vista

I have tried to give remote assistance to a friend who has Vista. I have XP
and so far have been unable to set it up. I have tried it thru Live Messenger
but I get the message that I have the wrong version of Messenger when I know
that my version is current. Any ideas ?
