XP install and SP2
Hello,
This may be a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find a clear answer.
I'm building a new PC and I've installed Win XP (original, no service
packs). I'm trying to follow along in the motherboard manual - it says to
install all Windows updates and service packs before installing chipset
drivers, etc...For some reason, and I think this is a common problem with my
particular motherboard, my onboard ethernet ports are not working, so I
cannot install any updates. I have, however, downloaded SP2 and installed it
just to see what happens. After hours of screwing around with drivers and
installing a PCI NIC card (which didn't work), the ethernet ports magically
began working. Anyway, I guess my question is, does SP2 include all prior
updates that get downloaded with Automatic Updates? I know it includes
everything from SP1...Just wondering if I somehow need to get my ethernet
ports working before installing SP2 in order to install updates first (if
they're not included in SP2).
Thanks!!

Re: XP install and SP2
Personally I've allways used the motherboard cd to install drivers prior to
updating win. If your mobo contains an onboard nic, then likely it wont work
untill you've installed chipset & other mobo drivers
sp2 includes all updates prior to sp2
You *dont* obtain drivers from winupdate but use the manufacturers drivers
avilable from their cd or sites

I thought you said your ethernet ports "magically began working" and
you downloaded/installed SP2.

Re: XP install and SP2
SP2 includes everything you need. You do not need SP1 first or any of the
updates release prior to SP2.

Re: XP install and SP2
And as soon as you have SP2 installed, see this KB article which should help
make Automatic Update functional:
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:

Since you are install XP onto a new "system", you should consider
downloading the SP 2 completely and slipstreaming it with the orginial
CD. This creates a new install CD which will have all the updates in
SP2 pre-installed. Then just install the chipset drivers and then do
the remaining updates.

Not quite; you still need the hot fixes that came out AFTER SP2 was
released.

SP2 includes SP1 and all the hotfixes between SP1 and SP2. You still
need to get the updates that occurred after the release of SP2 though.
And there are quite a few of them.

Re: XP install and SP2
Like I said, he doesn't need the updates released prior to SP2.

You're fine. Just get the nic working so you can get the 100+ updates
to SP2 later.
