XP Office Viewer ... I have XP Home & Son has XP Office 2007
Hello

We recently bought our son a laptop for schoolwork which had to have XP
Office and today he sent a .docx file over for me to print but it wouldn't
open as I only have XP Home with Works Suite.

It took me to a download page and I downloaded the Microsoft Office Word
Viewer 2003 and it installed. On the download page it said that I should be
able to view a list of documents and .docx would be one of them.

I went to Start, All Programmes, clicked on Office Word Viewer and tried to
open the document (.docx) but it wanted me to do more downloads and this is
where I stopped as I wasn't sure what I was doing.

I already have on my computer the xl viewer and powerpoint viewer as I do
get sent these documents to read and then print off.

Any tips on what I should do and if I have downloaded something wrong would
be appreciated as we can't afford to buy him his own printer as well as just
buying the laptop.

Thank you very much.

If the two laptops have WiFi built in, why not share your printer with your
son's laptop?

Another solution is for you to install OpenOffice on your laptop. This
opens MS Office documents (and probably better than Word Viewer). And it's
FREE!

You can utilize your existing Office suite by installing the Microsoft Office
Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

Here's the link for the download. Be sure to verify that your system meets the
OS and Office revision levels cited under System Requirements.

Re: XP Office Viewer ... I have XP Home & Son has XP Office 2007
Thank you both for taking time out to help.

MI5 - We have a desktop (mine) and laptop (son) and he accesses wirelessly
and I think I have wireless on my desktop I access through the phone lines
and I wouldn't know where to start trying to sort out a printer wirelessly.

I haven't heard about OpenOffice but I will read up about that later.

David - I don't have Office on my desktop. I have XP Home Edition (1½ years
old) and Work Suite (older from a computer we don't use anymore).

Is there a compatibility for xp home?

Thank you both very much.

Re: XP Office Viewer ... I have XP Home & Son has XP Office 2007
The MS operating systems themselves do not come with any Office applications.

You stated that you installed the Office Word Viewer. By installing the
compatibility update you will then be enable to access the files formatted in
the Office 2007 format (.docx).

Along with most legacy Office programs, it also updates these viewers:

Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003
Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003
Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003

For more detaled info read the content of the link I previously cited.

Don't bother with half-assed measures. Buy your own copy of Office 2007
Professional.

At that price, I'd buy two, and keep one as a backup.

Perhaps the easiest solution would be for him to do a "Save as"
instead of "Save," and choose to save the file in the old doc format
instead of docx. Your Word viewer should then open the file without a
problem.
