Windows XP Fails to Open
I have accidentally uninstalled the driver for the keyboard on my Dell
Dimension 4500. ""No problem" I thought, "I have the Resource Disk
containing the drivers." But I was wrong - the Resource Disk I recently
received from Dell does not contain any keyboard drivers. Can anyone
suggest another source for the driver?

There are some important consequences, since I cannot use the keyboard I
cannot log on as the Administrator because I cannot type-in the password. I
can log-in using the Guest account and run a number of programs, if I only
use the mouse, because the Guest account does not need a password, but, as a
Guest, I cannot use System Restore or change items using the Control Panel.
I am typing this request on my Inspiron.

Dimension 4500, 2.53GHz processor, 512Mb DIMM, Windows XP, 20Gb hard disk,
80Gb hard disk, Roxio CD R/RW, Blueyonder Broadband & LAN, Dell Photo
All-in-One printer.

Dimension 4100, 1GHz processor, 256Mb SDRAM, Windows ME, 20Gb hard disk,
Adaptec CD R/DW, HP Deskjet 840C, Scanjet 3300c, Blueyonder Broadband & LAN

Inspiron 8600, 1.4 Ghz processor, 512Mb SDRAM, Windows XP Home, 40Gb hard
disk, Philips CDRW/DVD disk drive, Blueyonder Broadband & LAN

Netgear RP614 v2 router.

11.30 a.m. Unfortunately, the problem has now worsened, I can no longer
run Windows on the Dimension 4500. I have tried booting-up whilst
pressing the F8 button, the usual page opens offering various choices and I
have tried several of these but now the computer fails to download the
Windows opening screen and hangs without any trace on the screen. There is
no residual mouse pointer shown.

This problem seems even worse than the previous one. Please can anyone
help?

RE: Windows XP Fails to Open
Try using Sysrem Restore to restore a restore point that predates the removal
of the driver.

It will restore the loading of the driver for the mouse and it should work
because XP doesn't delete drives, it just uninstalls them.

Open System Restore by going Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System
Tools -> System Restore.

I hope that you don't have SR disabled.

RE: Windows XP Fails to Open
To Eric: Thank you for your reply but my first message stated that I was
unable to run Sytem Restore; now my situation is this:

11.30 a.m. Unfortunately, the problem worsened, I can no longer run
Windows on the Dimension 4500. I have tried booting-up whilst pressing
the F8 button, the usual page opens offering various choices and I have tried
several of these but now the computer fails to download the Windows opening
screen and hangs without any trace on the screen. There is no residual
mouse pointer shown. I have tried to boot up in the Safe Mode with the
command option selected but the output display stops after six lines.

This problem seems even worse than the previous one. Please can anyone
help?

During Bootup, press F2 to enter the BIOS. Once there, turn on "USB
Legacy Control" and the kb should be seen.

Re: Windows XP Fails to Open
Thank you Elmo, but your advice will not work my mouse plugs into the mouse
socket at the rear of the console it does not have a USB connection. In
fact, the USB Legacy Control is enabled.

Re: Windows XP Fails to Open
I have now had the hard disk reforomatted and Windows XP was reinstalled.
This was carried out at a local Computer Repair Shop. They managed to
restore successfully much of my personal date that was not already backed-up
and since then I have been reinstalling many of the programs that were lost.
Lesson - be more careful with the helpful suggestions found on some web
sites and back-up regularly.

Thank you to those people who tried to help me.
