unexplained folders in root directories

hey all,
i've got a couple of folders on my root drive of my external drives and
sometimes shows up in my ftp root folder. something like the following:
8616cd247c1921eeb936112552ea3e
can someone possibly tell me what this folders might be? I can't delete them
or see anything in them?

When certain updates are downloaded they get unpacked onto the
volume on your PC with the largest free space. Done automatically
and can be safely removed ( Best done immediately after a bootup ).
