Mail notification on XP blue screen

All of a sudden I have a mail notification, as is "1 unread mail message. 2
programs running," next to my name, on the blue XP screen. It may be a very
old message as it is from a business I long ago stopped using.

I can't open the message nor can I get rid of the notification.

Any help would be appreciated.
