This can happen if your installation CD is from the original release of XP and
does not contain any of the service packs. Take a look at these articles for
more info.

The solution to this problem is to install XP using a "slipstreamed"
installation CD that includes Service Pack 2. Take a look at these articles for

You could also leave XP on your current C drive, create a new partition from the
unallocated space, format it and use the new drive to store data and personal
files. Makes backing up your files easier.
