Folders keep going read only

Folders, both those with subfolders and those without, keep going "read only"
even though by means of right click/properties I keep turning off the read
only. Why is this?

You cannot view or change the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in
Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, or in Windows Vista

The date and time was 1/17/2008 5:04 PM, and on a whim, Moonbarker

By design.

The greyed out check mark for a folder means
NOTHING, NO CHANGE, WAITING TO BE USED
This is because the read-only box in a folder's properties is only used
to apply or remove the read-only setting from all of the folder's files
at once. If you clear the box and click Apply, then the files in the
folder will be cleared of any read-only attributes they have. Like wise
for checking the box to apply the attribute to all files. The square
reappears the next time because, once again, you haven't used it.

The read-only attribute is not applicable to folders in XP which is why
you can't adjust it. If you want to set permissions on a folder, see:

By default in XP Home, you can only make files and folders under My
Documents "private". Otherwise, to see the security tab in WinXP Home,
restart in Safe mode and log on with an account that has administrator
privileges. To get into Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the
computer is starting up. This will get you to the menu where you can
choose Safe Mode.

Note that the file system must be NTFS, not FAT32.

No they don't. Folders don't have a read-only property. What you see
on the "Properties" page for a folder is a three-state checkbox in its
third state: neither checked nor unchecked. It's a short cut that
allows you to set or clear the read-only attribute for *all* files
within the folder very quickly.

*looks at the 2nd link* Ah, OK, thanx, if the files within are getting
changed to Read Only, I'm satisfied. It's annoying to go to rename a bunch
of files and keep getting "are you sure" on all of 'em because they're read
only
