MODEM ERROR MESSAGE 633

I recently had xp installed on my computer so that I could use a new printer.

Now that everything has been updated my modem seems to be at fault, i have
put all the fone numbers, domain names and passwords in from my service
provider. But when I go to dial up the following appears:

ERROR 633: THE MODEM (OR OTHER CONNECTING DEVICE) IS ALREDY IN USE OR IS NOT
CONFIGURED PROPERLY.

I checked the device manager , and the modem and phone application. the
latter told me that the modem was working and was assigned to port COM3. But
when I looked for COM3 on the device manager it wasn't there. all that was
listed were COM1, COM2 and the printer port.

Can anyone help me find out what is wrong with my modem?

The modem probably adds or assigns its own port so I doubt that's the
problem.

- Try the modem in a different slot.

- Try physically removing the sound card and/or NIC if possible, reboot
and see if the modem works. If so, there's a conflict between the two
devices. There's not always a notice in Device Manager.

- Try a hardware ng where the regulars have seen this before.
