Can't download XP Home Edition Updates...
Can anyone please tell me if there are problems with Microsoft Updates
lately? My reason for asking is that I cannot download and install ANY
updates, either online via Microsoft's updates site or when downloaded to my
XP SP2 Home Edition PC.

The problem has not been resolved by formatting my hard drive and
reinstalling everything from scratch - this is the first time in almost three
years that I've had to reinstall the original XP HE SP1 and update it with
SP2 from disk.

Up until last week, I had no problems in installing the updates at all. If
there was a problem with th O/S that prevented it from installing the
updates, then that problem should have been resolved with the fresh
installation and I should be able to update as normal, once again - surely?!

The ONLY update that I have successfully managed to install is IE7 - Can
anyone please advise?

Many thanks in advance.

RE: Can't download XP Home Edition Updates...
Hi Andrew, thanks for the reply - though I got a little bit lost following
your instructions... Namely, which tab do I find the "settings" in Internet
Options you refer to??

Again, my thanks.

Re: Can't download XP Home Edition Updates...
Thanks, Wolf - I did check that the installation was verified by calling
Microsoft and they said it was.

Having carried out these instructions, and downloaded and installed Windows
Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) Redistributable, I still cannot install any
other updates?! I know there are around 85 updates to be downloaded and
installed - Can anyone please help me??

I figured as much. I bookmarked a fix to this issue a long time ago.
Try this solution:

Step 1: Re-register the Windows Update client
=====
1. Quit all programs that are running.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. Type "regsvr32 jscript.dll" (without the quotation marks), and then
click OK.

4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded"
message, click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, repeat inputting the following
commands and click OK after each command.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuauserv.dll (May have the error " DllRegisterServer entry
point was not found". It is normal.)
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 iuengine.dll (May have the error " DllRegisterServer entry
point was not found". It is normal.)

Please test if the issue has been resolved. If not, let's go step 2.

Step 2: Check the ActiveX settings for Windows Update website =====
1. Open Internet Explorer (IE), go to Tools > Internet Options >
Security tab.

2. Press the Custom level button.

3. In the "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting" section,
please click to choose Enable.

4. Click OK.

Re: Can't download XP Home Edition Updates...
Hi Wolf,

Sorry it's been a while since my last post, but I am disabled and have been
confined to bed for a while.

I followed all your instructions and STILL cannot get my machine updated at
all?! I reregistered the dll files and made sure that my ActiveX settings
are set exactly as you suggested. I have tried downloading and installing
updates from both automatic settings and by manually updating via the
MIcrosoft Updates page, but still no luck?

I managed to get hold of WGA tool and applied that, but that didn't help
either. My last attempt this afternoon ended with Microsoft message saying
that Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)was not installed and then my PC
saying it was installing 32 updates before it closed down, which it did,
before I rebooted.

On reboot, and running updates from Microsoft website again, I am told that
none of the updates were installed as they ALL still appear in the newly
created list of updates to be downloaded and installed?! I feel as if I am
going round in circles, but standing still at the same time - if that makes
any sense - because this is a repetetive procedure in trying to get the
updates installed... I am at my wits' end... Aargh!

The way things are going, I reckon my only solution may be to wait until
XPSP3 is released on CD?? But I am aware that without these updates, patches
and hotfixes, my PC is vulnerable - What CAN I do to make it more secure
(Except keep my AV and firewall programs regularly updated and monitored)
other than disconnecting completely from the Internet??

Please help...

Well, you're in luck in the sense that SP3 is coming out pretty soon
and will supercede all patches and updates. I posted a link to a web
site that states SP3 will be available on either the 23rd or 24th of
March so that's not too far away. Someone once told me there's a file
that can be deleted and it will basically reset the downloaded WU
database but also any and all other one post-SP2. It's a
shotgun-to-a-fly approach but it's supposed to work. I don't recommend
it but if you can hold out for a few weeks, SP3 will be out any you
can at least have an operational machine in the meantime.
