Reloaded XP home -- now some problems
Hello all

I recently had to wipe my disk and reload. I have a very old XP Home
recovery disk, and have left automatic updates on.

Here are my questions

1 I seem to be getting odd copied folders appearing within other folders.
Reason?

2 I use Outlook 2000 (yes, I know its old but I like it and it has always
been great fo me). But now I notice postings in newsgroups are slow to
marked 'read'. This used to be instantaneous. Reason?

3 How can I see what Sps have been automatically applied?

4 What are the "horror stories" with SP3 that I've seen mentioned.

5 How can I arrange to be warned when an update wishes to be uploaded?

Thanks all

Depending which type of recovery cd you have, you can build a normal winxp
home setup cd in which you could slipstream SP2/SP3!
If you boot from that cd, does the default windows setup show or a
customised recovery screen made by the manufacturer?

Huh?

Do you let Outlook automatically delete old newsgroup messages? If not, i
guess the amount of saved messages is to high.

Don't trust the COA label or the informations on the cd. i have a new WinXP
Prof. SP2 setup cd but SP2 is not well integrated into the cd so Windows
Update and some applications think i still use SP1. After installation of
SP3 everything works fine.

You can check the version information of the kernel32.dll, eg. 5.1.2600.2180
(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158). On the CD the file is called KERNEL32.DL_, you
can open it with WinRAR or WinZip, extract the kernel32.dll, right-click,
Properties, Version.

I don't have any problems. I run my unattended WinXP Prof. SP2 DVD, install
WMP11, install IE7, install SP3, getting updates from Microsoft Update.
Never tested with slipstreamed SP3!

"...to be downloaded" you mean?! In the Control Panel you have a new entry
called "automatic updates" after SP2 is installed. There you can choose
between "automatically download and install updates", "automatically
download updates but ask for installation", "only show information on new
updates" and "disable automatic updates".

I also suggest to use Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update. It checks
not only for all Windows Updates, it also checks for updates for other
Microsoft software such as Office, etc.

While in the Windows Setup i disable the automatic updates when asked, after
the installation finished i install WMP11, IE7, SP3 and then check for
Updates using Microsoft Update. After all updates are installed i enable
automatic updates.
This way you don't get in fight with automatic updates and microsoft update.
The URL to install Microsoft Update is
