What error messages do you get? What happens exactly? Just saying "will not
run..." isn't enough.
Failure to install an operating system is usually caused by:
1. Bad install disk (test on another system); or
2. With XP, it can also be a mismatched install disk; i.e. one that is from
a BIOS-locked OEM system such as a Dell; or
3. Bad hard drive; or
4. Bad RAM.
This is quite an elderly machine you've got. It would not be surprising if
hardware components are failing. But you'll need to provide some more
details.
