Problem with MS08-030 / bthport.sys?? What starts up after WLNOTIFY?
My Windows XP Pro SP2 laptop won't boot after applying the MS08-030
update. Windows gets stuck at the "starting up" screen.

I replaced bthport.sys with the old file from the uninstall folder,
but that didn't help.

Using a BartPE CD, I was able to edit the registry to turn on verbose
status messages during boot. Now I can see what's happening (not
much). XP hangs while starting up WLNOTIFY. I see periodic disk
activity, but I've seen that before (something about sensing the DVD
drive). I've let it sit for over 20 minutes; still no boot.

I read about the trojan WINOTIFY and made sure I have the real thing.
I also copied a backup from dllcache, but still no joy.

The latest thing I tried was to actually delete WLNOTIFY.DLL (again,
with BartPE giving me access). Now XP is stuck on "RPCSS is
starting...", which I think I saw before, just before starting
WLNOTIFY before.

It seems like whatever happens right after WLNOTIFY is started is
where the problem is. Naturally, my backup is out of date enough that
I'd really like to get this system fixed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Thanks, but this is actually the update that seems to have caused the
problem. I installed that update on the 20th, and then couldn't boot.
I've been wrestling with this problem since then.

I already backed this out by copying back the bthport.sys file saved
in the uninstall folder (date is 4/13/08 as opposed to 6/13/08).

Thanks

Any odd messages in your event viewer that may clue you in to causes
outside of the BT driver?

My apologies to anyone on this trail. I couldn't futz with it any
longer. I reverted to a backup and that eliminated the problem. I may
never know (I can only hope!).
