DELETING REGISTRY ENTRIES

I am trying to delete some left over SYMANTEC entries from my registry using
REGEDIT. I get an "error while deleting key" message, even in SAFE MODE.
The programs themselves are gone.

How do I get rid of these entries? I believe they are slowing up the boot
process.

Sorry, found it!

Had to do with "permission" to delete the entry. Right click and check the
box. Leave it to SYMANTEC to make things difficult!

The date and time was 7/1/2008 7:36 AM, and on a whim, its_my_dime

Go to the Symantec site. I believe there are some utility programs
there for cleaning out the old entries. Search for the program you had
installed. You could take ownership of the entries but I don't
recommend that.

It is unlikely they are slowing your system down enough for you to
notice, so after you run the utility, you should be fine.

I know you've solved the prolblem, but a few observations:

1. Registry entries by themselves will make zero difference to boot time.

2. To remove obsolete items from the registry I would use ccleaner
(http://www.ccleaner.com/, freeware).

Actually that is a security measure that would be expected from any
decent AV/Security application, if the security software can simply be
disabled by malware then it isn't too well designed!

Thanks for your comments.

Very good point on locking the registry entries to prevent malware from
deleting them. I hadn't considered that.

Norton Removal Tool did not remove theses entries; I tried it several times.
The problem may, in part, have been missing UNINSTALL information.

CC Clean (a good program) didn't remove them either. It did clean up stuff
after the entries were removed by hand.

I took out NAV 2008 because of slow boot problems. My thought was that some
of these remaining registry entries were trying to find already removed
programs.

If you want to be sure to get all the entries,try Regseeker:
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

It's a handy little program that allows you to do a search for items,by entering
"Norton" & "Symantec". It will create a backup, before the removal, & will find many
other entries that are leftover , even after using the Norton Removal Tool.

While I don't endorse "registry cleaners" one bit, this program is a useful tool for
removing *specific* entries that remain from *specific* uninstalls.

If the program isn't there windows will just pass over it, it will slow your
PC down for as long as it takes windows to determine the program isn't
there.

If these registry keys didn't have a path in them, then I expect it would
have no effect at all. Often entries are just there to keep settings for the
program, and only come into play once the program is running.
