Thunderbird prob may be a Windows prob
Some 'experts' in alt.fan.mozilla suggested that I have a Windows
problem, not a Thunderbird problem. For that reason, I'm posting my
problem in this newsgroup.
I've used Thunderbird on a WinXP system happily for years, but after a
power outtage Thunderbird has begun closing itself whenever a link
within an e-mail is clicked on. (BTW, I was using version 1.5, but in
an attempt to fix the problem upgraded to 2.0.0.14. Unfortunately the
problem persists. And the only extension is Talkback 2.0.0.9.)
Also, if an e-mail has an attachment, such as a JPG file, the mere act
of trying to open the e-mail makes Thunderbird close immediately.
(Note that this happens so quickly, that it is possible that the
e-mail is indeed opening, but that something is automatically trying
to open the attachment, and that act of opening is what causes
Thunderbird to close itself.)
And if a new e-mail is started, and one tries to add an attachment,
Thunderbird closes. Also, oddly, under Tools/Options if I try to
select the heading 'Attachments', Thunderbird closes.
And no matter how many new profiles are created within the original
identity, they all malfunction similarly.
The only work-around found so far is to create a completely new
Windows Identity, as though a second person used my computer. Then,
logging on as that new identity and setting up a new TB account. That
account works fine. However, I'd like to solve the problem, and not
have to use a completely new Windows Identity.
BTW, this has been a very tricky problem. A history of it, and
attempted solutions, can be found at Experts Exchange
( http://snipurl.com/2ub8x - am not sure whether one must be an EE
member to view it).
All suggestions will be appreciated.

Have you tried backing up T-Bird, uninstalling it, downloading a fresh
set up and installing it again?

Re: Thunderbird prob may be a Windows prob
Hi Thunderbird
I read the EE thread you referenced. You For the "default mail client is
not properly installed" error, see MVP Ramesh's page here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/MailtoProtocol.htm
Even if you're not now getting those symptoms, it would be worth
checking the settings.
I do suspect McAfee may be interfering with Thunderbird. Have you tried
disabling its email protection? I don't remember seeing a mention of
that in the thread.

Re: Thunderbird prob may be a Windows prob
Thanks Nightowl, but neither of your suggestions works. I followed MVP
Ramesh's page's instructions, and also disabled email protection in
McAfee. Yet the problems continue.
And yes, p, I tried backing up T-Bird, uninstalling it, downloading a
fresh set up and installing it again - a number of times. That doesn't
help either.

And you made sure that there were no remnants of T-Bird left over after
uninstalling it? Try using Crap Cleaner's Issues features for that.

Yes, p. I used Revo Uninstaller twice, but no luck in solving the

To see if a Windows file was damaged during the power failure, click
Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged or
missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so
damaged files will be replaced.

I ran it, and it asked me to insert Windows XP Pro CD2. However, it is
lost, although it probably came with my 4-yr-old Dell Dimension 8400.
What is the best way to acquire that CD2?
