>MAX extension
I received several e-mails with document attachments with the .MAX extension.
I did find The Folder options control panel, and added the .MAX extension,
but still nothing.. I also have 2 files on my computer(I think they are
pictures), so apparently at some point I was able to open them. Can someone
please tell me if there is a common program that opens these files. I found
paperport does and I did have a paperport scanner at one point, but no longer
do. Does HPALL in One that will open these files.. Word?? What?? I am
stuck!!
Thanks for any and all input.

Several points:

1. An excellent source of information for questions like this is the
web site http://filext.com/

2. In this particular case, filext says that max is used by several
different programs. You should ask your correspondent for
clarification as to what the particular files sent to you are.

3. Opening attachments received by E-mail is very risky. You often see
advice not to open attachments from people you don't know. I think
that that's one of the most dangerous pieces of advice you see around,
because it implies that it's safe to do the opposite--open attachments
from friends and relatives. But many viruses spread by sending
themselves to everyone in the infected party's address book, so
attachments received from friends are perhaps the *most* risky to
open.

Even if the attachment legitimately comes from a friend, it can
contain a virus. I'm not suggesting that a friend is likely to send
you a virus on purpose, but if the friend is infected without
realizing it, any attachment he sends you is likely to also be
infected.

My personal practice is not to open E-mail attachments at all. I make
exceptions only for an occasional trusted friend.
