Cloning Western Digital Hard Drive
Hi:
I have a Sony desktop VGC-RA716G running Windows MCE (2005) with a 250 GB
Western Digital hard drive model WDC WD2500BB.
I am cloning this hard drive with an exact duplicate hard drive using
Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools software version 11.2 Windows.
I have cloned the master HD C;\ to the secondary slave HD F:\ twice and
each time I get a notice that 3-4 insignificant files were not copied. One
was a log file etc.and none appear applicable the problem I have with MS
Word 2002 after each clone.
Everything is fine with the exception of MS Word 2002 each time is
corrupted when I try and open a .doc file. I uninstall Word 2002 and
reinstall it and the cloned HD is fine.
I wonder if there is something proprietary with Word 2002 that causes this
each time? Just strange that the only problem that I have is Word 2002.
Thanks

RE: Cloning Western Digital Hard Drive
You failed to mention what software your using to clone, are you sure your
cloning or are you imaging?

Re: Cloning Western Digital Hard Drive
I am cloning my entire HD and everything is fine with the exception of Word
2002 each time that I clone. After cloning I immediately shut down and
configure the cloned drive as the Master with the old Master not even
connected.
I am using the spare cloned drive as a back up if ever I need it. The new
WD HD was only $60 and I figured this was the cheapest and easiest way to
have a complete back up ready to go if needed.
Thanks

Re: Cloning Western Digital Hard Drive
Then I would suggest you have a bad sector on the old HD, somewhere that word
has saved some files at , thus a corrupted word.

Re: Cloning Western Digital Hard Drive
I have no problems with Word 2002 or any application on my old HD. If I
had problems with it then I could expect problems with cloned HD; however,
that is not the case. Also error checking of old HD indicates no problems.

Re: Cloning Western Digital Hard Drive
Just let me throw this out there, as may be applicable somehow. Until
around 6 months ago, was last using Trend Micro Antispyware (standalone
product). Was using DI 7.0 for imaging the XP partition. When restoring
the image file, found that the Trend Micro Antispyware showed not being
registered. I found if I closed the antispyware, imaged, then restored,
problem did not occur. There may be some relationship to your problem.

ColTom2:
First of all, count your blessings that you were able to achieve a bootable,
basically functional clone using the WD disk-cloning utility. It's not
unusual that while that utility will usually create a functional clone of
the source HDD, in a fair amount of instances data corruption and/or data
loss of one sort or another will occur following the disk-cloning operation.
In some instances the problem is relatively minor as in the case you
experienced; in other cases the result is an unbootable dysfunctional HDD
(the recipient of the clone).
In any event, now that you have two hard drives, consider purchasing a
commercial disk-cloning (or disk-imaging) program that you can use on a
routine basis for comprehensive backup purposes.
