PC crashes during or after startup.
I've been give a PC from a friend and he said that its tempramental. he
re-installed XP Pro and formatted the hard drive. When I turn on the PC it
crashes during or just after startup, I have tried starting in Safe Mode and
Last Known Good Configuration and it keeps happening.

Can anyone help please?

RE: PC crashes during or after startup.
Jon,

I'm in the middle of the same problem with my HP. First thing you need to
do is hit F8 during startup and disable auto reboot. This will cause the
system to blue screen, and show what's causing the issue. Write it down, and
research possible fixes.

Thanks for that, I will try it. Mines an HP too, when it crashes the monitor
turns off and looks as though its completly shut down, is this what happens
with yours?

RE: PC crashes during or after startup.
Oh yeah... and it's frustrating as hell. I'm pretty sure my problem is a
hardware issue. Let me know what error messages you get. Maybe I can help.
I've already researched every possible error message on the planet!!!!!!!!!!
:-)

Every time that's happened to one of my pc's the first thing
I do is remove the side, turn it on and make sure the CPU
fan is spinning.

If I acquired a used computer, the first thing I would do with it
would be to reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea
how the computer has been maintained, what has been installed
incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and spyware there may be,
etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody else's mistakes and
problems, possibility of kiddy porn, etc., and I wouldn't recommend
that anyone else do either.

All the above stands no matter what your friend did, how knowledgeable
he is, etc.
