upgrade RAM, now Windows will not boot, error message

I recently upgraded the memory on an older HP Pavilion from 192mb to 512mb
(the maximum this computer will take). When I start the machine, I get a
full page error message that starts with the sentence: "We apologize for the
inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or
software change might have caused this." Then farther down the page it
suggests alternatives - safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with
command prompt, use last known good configuration or start windows normally.
I've tried all of those but none work. I can get into the BIOS setup with F1
at the blue HP screen, but I don't know what I'm doing there. I contacted HP
help and their final answer was that I must have bad memory and send it back.
However, in the BIOS setup it shows up just fine and according to HP is the
correct memory (SDRAM, 100 mhz, unbuffered DIMM).
Toward the end of the error screen there is a line that reads: "ERROR
Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller on Motherboard" and the line under
that reads: "Bus:01, Device:OB, Function:00.
The Windows version is XP Professional and I'm not sure if it was ever
upgraded to SP2.
I'd appreciate any help. Or is it time to sell my first-born and buy
another computer?

you might be better off by asking this in a hardware related group.
I think the issue is not the extra memory, but an irq conflict, I have no
clue why adding extra memory would cause this, therefore directing you to the
hardware group is indicated.

Have you tried setting the system back the way it was? If that works, the
problem is with the new RAM.

As to buying another computer - I regularly buy used PCs, often HP's, and
generally 3gHz P4's with at least 512 meg ram and legal XP Pro licenses.
These systems (no monitor or keyboard) tend to be around $200 - $250. A
couple of weeks ago I was able to get two for $130 each when an office was
getting rid of systems they had replaced - these had 2 gig RAM. The only
thing is that you often want to replace the hard disk with a newer, larger
one.

Just curious here. The onboard NIC, what happens if you disable it in the
bios setup regarding booting up XP current issue?

You may have to pull the battery on the motherboard temporarily, and
reinstall it. This in order to reset the cmos. Do this first.
