Can't access recovery console
I've got a Toshiba Sattelite A100 returning an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
message when I try to start it, apperantly I'm supposede to access the
recovery console and type chkdsk /r to fix it. My toshiba recovery CD doesn't
have the recovery console on it, only options to wipe the drive empty or
restore to factory state. I tried a different XP CD but I get the error
*** stop: 0x0000007e (0xC0000005, 0xF76450BF, 0xF7A91208 0xF7A90F08)

*** pci.sys - Address F76450BF base at F763E000, DateStamp 3b7d855c

Anyone knowing what to do would be amazing, thanks everyone.

Frequently, recovery CDs don't have the console available. But, there is
hope, because you can use *any* bootable XP CD for this purpose, Home or
Pro, OEM or retail. Just don't get into the install section.

You say that you get a Stop 0x7E error, when exactly do you get this? This
should not appear if you are correctly booting to the recovery console.

Now, before you go any further, you should stop and evaluate the status of
your backups and the value of the data on the system. If the backups
aren't current and the data has value, do not proceed with repairs before
removing the drive, attaching it to another system, and backing it up.
Your system is a laptop, so you need a $20 drive case or adapter to do this.
Alternately, get the case, get another hard disk, and install clean to that;
later, attach the old drive in the case to the laptop and copy your data
over.
