XP Stalling during boot screen
Just curious if anyone had any ideas. My XP service pack 2 is stalling every
time I boot it up (the black screen with the XP logo and the progress bar
below it).

The progress bar just gets frozen and nothing else happens. The only way to
get anything going is in safe mode, which still works fine.

I have tried a couple of system restores (back 10 days or so) to no avail -
the same problem persists. Any ideas.

Try this:
- Physically disconnect your machine from the Internet.
- Boot into Safe Mode.
- Run msconfig.exe (via the Start/Run facility)
- Uncheck each and every task under the Startup tab.
- Reboot normally.
Report the result here.

There is a switch that can be inserted into Windows XP boot.ini file
that allows the viewing of the drivers being loaded during start-up.
See here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314081/EN-US/

The /SOS option displays the driver names while the drivers are being
loaded, in lieu of the dots.

Re: XP Stalling during boot screen
Alright I gave it a shot. I inserted the /SOS and the instead of the old boot
screen I got a quickly moving list of command lines and then I arrive at a
blue screen with the Windows logo in the top right corner which reads:

Microsoft (R) Windows (R) version 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
1 System Processor [503 MB Memory]

It never moves past here - stalls again. Any ideas?
(thanks for the help)

Re: XP Stalling during boot screen
You now do much the same with the services under the Services
tab, while the Startup tasks are still disabled:
- Tick the box that lets you hide all Microsoft services.
- Untick the remaining services.
- Reboot in normal mode.

You should also check what the Event Viewer reports. Click
Start / Run / eventvwr.exe.

Re: XP Stalling during boot screen
Same result -- Stalls during the boot screen. Also, what am I looking for in
the event viewer?
