Free Antivirus suggestions
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2, DSL and presently have AVG,
Comodo, SpywareBlaster, and Hive Cleanup as well as System Mechanic.
I'm on a fixed income and really can't afford to buy too much. Within
a day or so my free AVG version will no longer be supported and I was
wondering if there is another free version I could use? Avast?
Kaspersky? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

Robert

AVG 7.5 will no longer be supported, but a free version 8 has been around
for a while now.

Re: Free Antivirus suggestions
If you like AVG simply go to their web site and download version 8.0X,
uninstall version 7.5 and then install the newer version. (The new version
will uninstall the older version but I had issues with the automatic
uninstall on one of my systems. The other 3 went without a hitch.

The download can be had at: http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

Re: Free Antivirus suggestions
Just be aware that AVG 8.0 adds features not found in previous
releases. Specifically AVG 8 adds a "Link Scanner" that can be
a problem. AVG 8 also tries to slip a Security Toolbar into it's
setup. If you use AVG 8.0 you'll want to consider disabling the
Link Scanner and then setting it as an ignored feature or the icon
in the system tray will always show a warning state.

I went to the AVG site and I don't see where version 8.0 is free, also
given the fact that it adds a link scanner and attempts to add a
toolbar I think I would rather try something different. Can anyone
suggest something as good as AVG 7.5 but without all the bells and
whistles?

Thanks,

Robert

It doesn't co-habit with other spyware scanners either, but I would have
thought that System mechanic is more of a threat than AVG.. :-)
