Shutdown hanging on PML

When I shut down something named PML seems to hang for 3-5 minutes. The only
indication of what is hanging when I close down is that "PML" appears in the
blue title bar of a transparent window that remains on the screen until the
computer shuts down. The window appears as a large dialog box in the upper
left corner, the title bar and border lines of the box appear but you can see
the desktop behind the box. I am assuming it is a driver or something that is
trying to close.

If anyone knows what is causing this or how to fix it I would appreciate the
help.

There is a "pml driver (hpz12)" installed with many different HP printers
and All in One units.

Can I remove the driver and still have the network printers work correctly?
(I guess I would have to know how to remove the driver also.) If I remove
this driver I am assuming I will need to re-install the local HP Color
LaserJet 4650 and HP Scanjet 5590, right? Or is it possible this driver
belongs to other printers? If I re-install the local printer and scanner is
it going to put this driver right back on.

Or, is there an easier fix, like a new hpz12 driver that will overwrite the
old?

From a little reading from security sites and blogs, this item can be
disabled. You can disable it from regedit:
"( set HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pml Driver HPZ12\Start
to 3 for "manual" startup, or to 4 for "disabled.

I tried saving a scanned document in pdf format to the My Documents
Directory without the Pml Service being started and got a message telling me
the Pml Service was not started.

I now have the Pml Service set to manual so the only time it starts is when
I am actually saving a scan. After the scan is saved, the Pml Service
automatically returns to the stopped state.

From other posters the following was stated.
It will cause some problem with the scanner, the system tray link and some
program reporting features, such as, ink levels. There may be more problem
areas,(unknown), if removed.
I found at least six printers and all the all-in-ones use this feature.

I would use ADD/REMOVE to uninstall (printer, scanner and all-in-one etc.)
remove USB connection then reboot and search for any items listed as HP and
remove them manually.
Visit the HP site for updates for the different units then install,
following HP directions, hoping that the problem will be resolved.
Sometimes going off line and closing active AV and Malware programs before
installing a problem application, program, external hardware etc. may help.
If you use system restore, create a restore point before proceeding with any
of the above.
This assumes the unit is virus and malware free.
