The "unmountable boot volume" error can sometimes be fixed with software
(see below) but it can also mean that the hard drive is failing. Since the
Bart's PE isn't working for you, I suspect the latter. If the hard drive
has physically failed, the time for backup has passed and the only way to
get data off the drive is to send it to a professional data recovery
company such as Drive Savers. This is quite expensive but only you know
whether your situation warrants spending that much money.
Test the drive with a utility downloaded from the hard drive mftr.'s
website. I always start out with the quick test but even if it passes the
quick test, I'd do a thorough test too. If the drive fails any physical
tests, replace it.
Software solution for the error: Boot with the XP cd into Recovery Console.
Do chkdsk /p
If there are errors, do chkdsk /r
After Chkdsk is finished in either case, go back into Recovery Console and
do fixboot, and then reboot (hopefully) into Windows.
A Bart's PE isn't needed, just the XP install cd.
