Folder Options > File Types > Opens with...
Win XP SP2

PDF files are not opening with the correct application.

I allowed Adobe Reader to install a version 8.1 the other day and then I
installed Adobe Acrobat 5.0.

Now all my PDF files open with AA5.0 even though Folder Options > File Types
> Opens with... PDF=AR8.1

Stephen, you should be able to upgrade Reader 5 to Reader 8.1. Download the
ver 8.1
Reader from Adobe and install it.

Hi Stephen,

I won't ask why you installed 5 after 8, but the last program installed
usually rewrites the registry items. I would uninstall all Reader
programs in Add/Remove Programs and then just install the one you want,
not multiple versions.

Re-install the reader, that should resolve the issue.

The 5.0 is a Writer. while the 8.0 is only a viewer

Re: Folder Options > File Types > Opens with...
Perhaps I have done something daft, but I installed AA5.0 as a writer (as
Bob I said) because I need to create PDF files. AA appears as a printer in
all my apps. I've used AA for a year or more, and AR has updated itself
every couple of months without any problems.

I use AR8 because AR offered to update itself years ago and so years down
the line I now have AR8. It's just that after AR8 installed the AA writer
stopped working. I didn't realise the two apps would fight each other.

I installed AA5 after AR8 because I thought they are separate apps. If I
reinstall AR8 I expect it will trample over AA5 again and I am back to
square one. Should I try an Adobe forum?

Stephen

Stephen,

I don't know who you're responding to as you've removed any prior
replies. It's always good to leave enough of a prior post so the reply
has relevance, and readers know who you're responding to.

If you want to use AA5 because of the print driver, I would install that
by itself, since it can read most PDF files. Have you considered a
different print driver, like pdf995, or others?
http://www.pdf995.com/

Or a different Reader like Foxit Reader?
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

AR8 shouldn't have stepped on your AA5 print driver, but for reasons
unknown it did. I would use an alternate of one or the other.

Only if you purchased the full version of AA5. AA5 had a reader only
also, and the name Acrobat was dropped after that version. You can also
purchase the full version of AR8 with a writer too.

Re: Folder Options > File Types > Opens with...
Sorry about cutting the previous Q&As.

I try to sort out problems like this head-on. That's me. So I would give
finding a fix a go first before going for a work-around.

> If you want to use AA5 because of the print driver, I would install that

Good idea. I didn't see that option during the install. I don't know enough
about the differences between Readers and Writers to install bits. So far
things have worked fine. The problem occured the other day when AR8.1.2
installed. I have posted a question (or 3!) on the Adobe Read forum.

>Have you considered a different print driver, like pdf995, or others

Have pdf995. Have used AAWriter out of habit and just wanted to know what's
wrong. I try to run a clean-ish PC, so would uninstall AAW if the problem
can't be repaired.

> Or a different Reader like Foxit Reader?

No I haven't. AR has been fine until now. Thanks for the link.
