free disk capacity?

Dear all,

I am using XP professional, It starts to slow down. When I right click on C:
properties I find: used space 21GB, free space 6GB and capacity 27GB; and I
see the pie chart is almost full of blue against purple. Few months ago it
wasn't like that and I haven't installed any new programs since then, also I
do not feel that my few programs will take all of this amount of GBs. I tried
D.Cleanup, defragmentation, and deleting temporary files by using: Start Run
(dllcache, recent, prefetch, temp, %temp% and files in internet properties)
and also reduced System Restore settings.
I checked C:Windows and found tens (10s) of files start with
$NtUninstal+number+$, I tried to check their created date and some of them
are very new, I am not sure what modified mean? and know accessed. Honestly I
tried and even deleted some of them. I am not sure if should delete them all.
I feel the problem increases everyday (everyday I lose more space).
Can you help me with any way that help me to find and determine which data
(files or folders) that should be removed to free disk capacity?.

These days hd are really inexpensive, a27 gig hd is really small compared to
todays sizes, your really need 20 gig just for the operating system, not to
mention additional space for applications, I suggest you get a new larger
primary hd and replace your old outdated one.

Actually, the amount of occupied disk space has almost no effect on the speed at which your computer performs. A hard disk would need to be virtually filled in order affect your computer's performance, and with 6GB you have plenty of free space.

A computer's speed is largely a function of how much RAM and what processor you have and what demands your software is placing on that hardware. Better to look at what software is running in the background.

Many thanks sgopus many thanks Daddy.
I really thought of a larger HD, you know still sticked with this one as I
had spent months making it adjustable to me.
Any information about the mentioned type of files start and end with $? What
does that mean? money?
How can I know the RAM functionality?

Removing the Windows Update 'uninstall' files will not get you too much free
space, but it is safe to remove them.

You already have enough free space such that general speed will hardly be
affected.

A bigger issue you may have is the amount of RAM installed and the CPU.

You may also have some malware on your computer. Go to this website..

www.malwarebytes.org

and download the program.

Run Disk Cleanup or remove temp Internet files via Internet Explorer.

Then run malwarebytes in Safe Mode. Reboot and run in regular mode. It may
be better after doing this..

The files which start and end with $ are reserved for use by Windows. Leave
them alone.

As for disk sizes, the system drive on this computer is (at 160 GB) the
smallest that I could find when I needed to buy another disk. All it
contains is Windows and the various associated files. So, I will never see
the message that you saw.

I have seen this happen from users copying movies/music to the hard drive
then burn and not delete the original and also using the Media Center -
record shows option.
