locked up

notebook is hp pavilion,4 yrs old, 3.0 ghz,512 mb, 60 gb hard drive. windows
xp 2002. locked up and shut down while checking mail, now can not get past
blue start up screen. verizon high speed internet in use,also spysweeper in
place.any help apreciated
