Configuration problem or defect drive?
I already tried to get help on this but wasn't successful - so this is my
second shot. My first attempt was a month ago and I did a lot of reading
since - equally unsuccessful.
The Problem: My Asus DRW2014L1T won't open it's door for me. It also doesn't
recognize any CD's I 'force' into it (emergency open). So far this sounds
like a hardware problem. There are some aspects though that make me doubt
that: during boot my other DVD drive is correctly displayed as PATA (Pioneer
DVR 112) but no mention of the Asus (no mention of the SATA HDD either by the
way - so maybe that's normal?). In 'My Computer' the drive is listed as
'CD-Rom' drive. In 'Device Manager' it is listed under the correct name and
as properly working. In 'Computer Management/Disk Management' it's the same
as in 'Device Manager' - the Pioneer is recognized as DVD, the Asus is listed
as CD-Rom drive. Under 'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' I have 9 listings (is that
normal - I thought I only had 3 drives in total and although there was one
step during installation of my broadband modem installing a 'CD-Rom device'
that only makes 4???):
Intel ICH9 2 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 2 - 2926
Intel ICH9 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 1 - 2920
Primary IDE Channel (Details: PCIIDE\IDECHANNEL\4&23C3F348&0&0)
Primary IDE Channel (Details: PCIIDE\IDECHANNEL\4&3A09A70B&0&0)
Primary IDE Channel (Details: PCIIDE\IDECHANNEL\5&1F7D41A9&0&0)
Secondary IDE Channel (Details: PCIIDE\IDECHANNEL\4&23C3F348&0&1)
Secondary IDE Channel (Details: PCIIDE\IDECHANNEL\4&3A09A70B&0&1)
Secondary IDE Channel (Details: PCIIDE\IDECHANNEL\5&1F7D41A9&0&1)
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller (Details:
PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_6121&SUBSYS_5442808086&REV_B2\4&2 DA1E264&0&00E4)
If I disconnect the Asus the boot process is a lot faster, with the Asus
attached boot goes through a couple of 'please hold or call back later'
phases, particularly when the drives are being 'detected' (or not).
Any clue what's going on? Is it just the drive itself (I hope not - the
dealer is 800 miles away and I won't get there again before July)?
System Info: Windows XP Pro 2, Intel DX38BT board, Intel Core2 2,66, NVidia
XT6800, plenty of free space on the harddrive, DDR3 1333 1GH RAM, no viruses.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Got another PC around you can stick the Asus drive in?
Have you done any recent hardware changes, like flipping cables, M/S
settings etc that might be wrong now? or did this just start one day.
The will not open the door, is a pretty good hardware issue. With
power only, I'd say the drive should at least open and close with the
button.

Sounds like a defective drive.

Re: Configuration problem or defect drive?

I had the exact same problem with my few months old DRW-1814BLT. I had
only used it very little, never even burned a DVD with it.

So I returned it to the store where I bought it from and about 6 weeks
later I got a replacement. Apparently ASUS couldn't fix the problem,
assuming that's who the store send it to, so I got a brand new ASUS
DRW-2014L1T. Happy as I was to get a "better" replacement that I had
bought, installed it and burned a couple of CD's. Now the ******* thing
won't read _any_ CD, empty or not!! It does read DVD's but that's not
exactly why I bought it... From the word get go, I got some error
message as soon as I started Nero (which came bundled with the burner)
about the Lightscribe not working, whatever, but since I didn't intend
to use it I didn't worry.

I guess I've got to get this one replaced as well. Unless someone has a
better idea?
