DVD-RW drive problems

XP SP3
Just installed my first DVD +/- RW drive (Philips SPD6005BD) and am
encountering what I think are fairly standard DVD issues but I don't
know the answers.

1 - Many DVD's refuse to play because of "copy protecton" issues and
tell me to update my video hardware drivers
2 - Those that do play, (non commercial ones) play without sound.

Audio CD's play fine so the hardware is obviously connected to my
onboard sound okay.
I can install software provided on a DVD disc.

The device shows in Device Manager as Philips SPD6005T and the driver is
shown as Microsoft, 1/7/2001, 5.1.2535.0, signed by Microsoft Digital
Publisher

I can't make much sense of the DVD troubleshooter and am wary about
updating a video card driver via Windows update site. All advice welcome
please.

DO NOT update video drivers from the Microsoft site - always get the latest
drivers from the video card manufacturer's web site. If the video is built
into the motherboard then that manufacturer will have the updates.

Did you check the DVD manufacturer's web site for new firmware?
Troubleshooting? Newsgroups or forums?

I think it is a Media Player issue. I can play DVD's with sound on Media
Player Classic but not on the XP latest version of Windows Media Player.
One site advised tinkering with the Tools - Options - Advanced but that
button is greyed out in my Media Player even in the Admin account.
I also understand it may be to do with Nero Burning ROM - I have
5.5.10.54 - apparently it mucks up the codecs.

WMP either tells me it can't play the DVD because of Copy Protection or
plays it without sound. Media Player Classic plays them all fine.

So I'll move this to a software group. Thanks though.

updates on thier website until its gone thru Microsoft Hardware Quality Labs
& gets its digital signature,the updates may not be the very latest but
thier fine.
Also,try installing the dvd with the video,copy the entire video to pc,use
wind-
ows encoder 9 series & convert the data,then play..

I didn't understand what you meant by "Also,try installing the dvd with
the video,copy the entire video to pc,use windows encoder 9 series &
convert the data,then play.." - are you suggesting that to watch a DVD I
copy it to my hard disk first? And also - not clear what you mean by
"use window encoder 9 series".

What I did not mention, because of the way you asked the question, but;
Windows Media Player 11 does not come with the ability to play DVDs - you
must purchase a plugin. One is here: http://apps.corel.com/lp/xpacks/

Perhaps your AC3 filter is damaged.
For DVD sound you need an AC3 audio decoder.
Try this AC3 audio decoder :

A guide with instructions is available for download on same page.

Check at Windows Update, WMP, DirectX updates.
Get sound and video updates (if any available) from manufacturer.

They most certainly are not. Microsofts drivers have disabled many a piece
of hardware until it is removed. Microsoft hardware drivers are usually
generic and they don't always work correctly with everything they are
designed to. The manufacturers are a far more reliable source and will
usually more correctly interface with the more bespoke features.

Why should the manufacturers go to all that trouble? There is no compulsion
to pay Microsoft to do this and not all do.

Thanks for all the replies. I've decided to sidestep the problem by
using Media Player Classic for any DVD's I want to play on the computer.
