router

I'm ready to move to broadband (RoadRunner) but I need suggestions on which
router to get.

There will be one PC and one internet game system on the network.

The PC is not setup for wireless so I would like a router that is both wired
and wireless.

I've never had broadband or a networked system so I don't know much about
it. If you need more info ....ask.

First off, make sure RoadRunner doesn't supply a router/modem combo.
Verizon does supply a wireless modem/router. So I was up and running
with no hardware needed. And my old cable modem, and wireless linksys
router and 4 port switch are all spare now. Gathering dust.

The 'internet game system' is the only item that bothers me, as I'm not
sure what additional considerations you need for that.

But simply put, if RR installs just a modem, then that supplies you one
RJ45 jack for one internet connection (normally). To make a home
network you buy a wireless router and plug it in that one jack and the
router usually comes with 4 wired ports and wireless. Now you are
ready to plug 4 wired items in and as many wireless items you want.

If they give you a combo unit, then you have no purchase to make. Its
even simpler.

My old cable company would charge for additional IP addresses, so having
a router is great. As the modem itself is the one IP address your ISP
gives you, lets say its 76.44.33.22. Then your router gives your
internal network a whole new set of IPs like 192.168.1.2 thru
192.168.1.255. As you can see the internal IPs are different from the
external. This is handled by the equipment so don't let it bother you,
but you can see that this is why people like putting routers on home
systems for a small level of protection from the outside.

Sorry for being wordy. Somebody else should address your 'game'
consideration.

A friend of my sons setup RR and his game system. RR (Time Warner) supplied
a modem but no router. TW prolly has routers for extra $ but I'll just buy
my own. Though it will be worth a phone call to see if it's free.

Why ask HERE? What router you pick has NOTHING to do with the OS and
as such is out of place HERE.
