Recording with Sony DW-U10A DVD crashes XP
My friend has the above DVD drive on his Windows XP SP3 PC. The drive plays
music and DVD's without a problem but whenever he tries to record something
XP just crashes and restarts. The Event Viewer gives no information about
this crash but the Device Manager shows that the current software is version
5.1.2535.0 dated 1 July 2001.

I have searched the Sony web site but can find nothing about this problem
nor can I find any updated drivers or firmware.

Can anyone please offer any help with this problem?

Stan, July 2001? That's a long life even for a Sony.

Hi Rich,

I too was impressed with the life of my friends drive. Unfortunately, it
still won't record so why throw it away if it can be fixed?

Can you offer any help?

Re: Recording with Sony DW-U10A DVD crashes XP
One thing he can try which is very simple. Just rt click the Dvd Drive
Icon and select Properties>Recording. The box should be checked "Enable CD
Recording on this Drive". But, usually these types of drives fail exactly
the way your friends drive is behaving.
It may work fine for part of it's function but flaky the rest of the
time. Sounds like the laser that reads is still working but the laser
that writes or burns is kaput.
