Is "S.M.A.R.T." faiulure on HD repairable?
Is "S.M.A.R.T." faiulure on HD repairable?

I have recently experienced a S.M.A.R.T. failure on
one of my 80GB HD. It still works but how serious this
"SMART" failure?

I have read this advert - but still don't know whether this
failure ca be repaired or is this HD effected for scarp?

"predict your hard drive life with Active SMART. Run Active SMART and you
will get detailed information about drive health status. Active SMART will
precisely trace any event occurring inside your hard drive that may lead to
a drive failure, and it will notify you before the drive fails."

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is
essentially predicting a failure. It's telling you "backup and get me fixed
or just live with the consequences."

http://www.storagereview.com/guide20...uresSMART.html
http://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htm

I would download the hard disk drive manufacturer's diagnostics utilities
and run them against the drive (after backing it up) to see what they say
and probably replace the drive if they confirm an issue.

So, that would mean, that SMART is not repairable.
The HD is Hitachi there is nothing much about the status
apart from error referring to the HD failure.

Thanks for your help

S.M.A.R.T. is a tool that tells you the hard drive is in imminent danger of
physically failing. It isn't a question of repairing S.M.A.R.T.; it means
you should back up your data and replace the hard drive because you can't
repair a failing hard drive.

Hope that clarifies this for you.

No, there's no repair possible. Download a diagnostic utility from
the hard drive manufacturer's web site and use it to more thoroughly
test the hard drive, if you like.

Having seen the same error, I can only say: "Back up your data
daily until you replace that drive."

On those machines I on which I've seen those S.M.A.R.T. warnings,
catastrophic hard drive failures invariably followed. Some hard
drives lasted for a few days after the warnings first appeared, one
lasted months, but some lasted only minutes. I suppose the one that
lasted months could be considered a false alarm, as "months" hardly
translate to "imminent," but, on the whole, I'd suggest you take the
warnings seriously.

SMART didn't fail, SMART is telling you your DRIVE is failing. SMART is
a fault detection tool that monitors your drive for impending failure.

If SMART has alerted on a drive then it's time to replace the drive or
risk a total loss.

Please read about S.M.A.R.T. --> that is why I included the links.

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what it is and what is
happening and what you should do about it.

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is doing its
job as a watch-process and is telling you that it looks like your hard disk
drive is about to be toast. It is giving you a window in which to backup
everything important to you. It (in itself) is not an error - it is merely
reporting the error to you. *You* are responsible for taking action (which
may include backups, verifying with the Hard Disk Drive diagnostics what the
particular error is, replacing the hard disk drive, etc.)

Want to know where to get the hard disk drive diagnostics utility for your
Hitachi hard disk drive? Not surprisingly - Hitachi's web site. ;-)

Hitachi

I'd say the "Drive Fitness Test" is the thing you want.

Sometimes 'imminent' is not so imminent. I had a WD 2.5GB drive
that developed the "click of death" in 1998. It finally died earlier
this year, although it has only had sporadic use in the last 3 years.
Up to 2005 it ran 6-8 hours a day with lots of click-clunks, but no
data loss. It was only being used as a FAT16 DOS disk in multi-
boot with Win98SE.

I don't believe anything I see involving SMART though. I had a drive
over five years ago predicing a failure in SMART. I'm still using
that drive today. My father has a six year old HD with the same
story.

Yes, I know two incidents is not statistically significant, but I'm
just sayin..............
