AMD Cool'n'Quiet | DRAM timing questions...
....AMD Cool'n'Quiet XP driver, and DRAM "Auto" vs. Manual
timing questions ? :-)

.....deep breath, <whooshing noise as Richard inhales>, ....please bear with
me !

I've just "whiled away" a couple of hours poking and prodding bios settings
in an Asrock AliveNF6G-VSTA/M/ASR motherboard, now with x2 6000 cpu |
2x512mb Crucial ddrII-667, on it, and running CPU-Z after reboots to see
what's happening with timings, under various bios settings / scenarios.
....(btw I installed "AMD_Processor_Driver_1320053-i.e. Cool'n'Quiet driver
for XP," and "AMD Power monitor", so that I can see if and when cpu is
throttling down).
..... ... now ! in bios "AM2 Boost" setting - apparantly, (...gleaned from
even more more bios tweaks and reboots !!!!), has to be disabled, this makes
7 bios options,
beneath "AM2, appear, among these is "Cool'n'Quiet," which is now enabled.

....soooooo "Cool'n'Quiet" seems to be working - i.e. AMD Power Monitor shows
cpu lingering at 1000mhz and 1.1volts, ...and when I make the machine do
something cpu intensive, it goes to 3000mhz and 1.4volts.

I also discovered that "Multiplier/Voltage" change has to be set to "Auto,"
or "AMD Power Monitor" shows that cpu frequency and volts stays at 3000mhz
and 1.4volts all the time.

Now !! ...CPUz reveals SPD details for my 2 x 512mb's DDRII-667mhz as
Frequency 333mhz
CAS# Latency 5.0
RAS# to CAS# 5
RAS# Precharge 5
TRAS 15
TRC 20

BUT, CPUz's "Memory" tab shows that my memory, (thanks to bios "Memory clock
"AUTO" option?), is currently running at:-
DRAM Frequency 200.9 mhz
FSBRAM CPU/5
CAS# Latency (CL) 4.0
RAS# to CAS# (tRCD) Delay 4
RAS# Precharge (tRP) 4
Cycle Time (tRAS) 12
Bank Cycle Time (tRC) 17
Command Rate (CR) 2T

....so I thought I would go in and try to set the memory timings myself :-(
....and was horrified to see a list of DRAM timing settings in there, almost
as long as your arm !!!

I've set a few that I recognize from CPUz's SPD list but, any help with the
following would be muchly appreciated !
( ? = I haven't a clue! )
My memory is Crucial/Micron PC2-5300 (333MHz)
4HTF6464AY-667E1

Memory Clock [333MHz (DDRII667)] ...I did that one all by myself
:-)
Flexibility Option [Disabled]
CAS Latency (CL) [5 CLK] ...and these three - aren't I clever :-)
TRCD [5 CLK]
TRP [5 CLK]
TRTP [Auto] ? options are Auto, 2-4 CLK, 3-5 CLK
TRAS [15 CLK]
TRRD [Auto] ? options are Auto,2,3,4,5 CLK
TRC [20 CLK]
TWR [Auto] ? options are Auto,3,4,5,6 CLK
TWTR [Auto] ? options are Auto,1,2,3
TRWTTO [Auto] ? options are Auto,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 CLK
TWRRD [Auto] ? options are Auto,0,1,2,3 CLK
TWRWR [Auto] ? options are Auto,1,2,3
TRDRD [Auto] ? options are Auto,2,3,4,5
MA Timing [Auto] ? options are Auto,1T,2T
...mmm ...I wonder if "MA" is the same thing as CPUz's "Command Rate" ???
Bank Interleaving [Auto] ...options are Auto,Disabled
....just booted with the above settings and ran cpu-Z show fsb is still at
200.9mhz, which I suspect is the ddr rate, ...so how do I get it running at
166mhz on the board, in order to get nearer 333mhz ddr ?

....so one question is, Is it okay to set just what DRAM timings that one has
ferreted out, and leave all the rest set to "Auto" ??

....any deliberations muchly appreciated, including views on this
Cool'n'Quiet feature. i.e. would it be best to forget all about it and
leave the thing running flat out, at 3gzh/1.4volts ?

regards, Richard

RE: AMD Cool'n'Quiet | DRAM timing questions...
Try end page,load optimal defaults,save & exit BIOS...Youre not running a
server,or performance board...

Re: AMD Cool'n'Quiet | DRAM timing questions...
Thanks for your response.
I didn't fancy doing what you suggested. ...and I know I'm not running a
performance board !!!,
and I ONLY wanted the CORRECT and BEST and OPTIMAL settings !!!!!
....mainly because, after discovering a few weeks ago, (with everything set
to AUTO in bios, in my old - main PC Conroe865pe/D935/2x512mb Corsair
ddr400), that fsb was running at a much less than optimal speed, and I had
to rummage in there and make some manual settings, to get the CORRECT
hardware setup. It's now MUCH more responsive and faster.
I was not using the Intel SpeedStep feature btw !

After more research on the memory timing options listed in my bios, (in my
2nd PC ...AMD hardware),
I set the short list of DRAM timings as revealed by SPD / CPU-Z, in my bios,
and left the rest set to Auto,
....and bearing in mind that cpu multiplier and voltage has to left set to
Auto to reveal, and "enable" Cool'n'Quiet option, ( AMD XP Power** driver is
installed BTW), ...A little while ago I arranged my screen so that CPU-Z
was positioned upper right, AMD "PowerMonitor" was positioned lower right,
....and HOT CPU Tester Pro was positioned screen left.
....and started a HOT CPU benchmark running.

AMD Power Monitor showed both cores jumping from 1000mhz - 1.1v
to 3000mhz - 1.40v
and CPU-Z Memory tab showed DRAM frequency jumping from 200.9mhz to 334.9mhz
(both ddr ratings obviously), or 100.45mhz / 167.45mhz "real" mhz, if you
prefer.
....so obviously FSB frequency gets reduced in relation to cpu mhz, ...I
wanted to see that it was increasing to at least memory specification whilst
the cpu was under load !

so, I'm happy, ... a little more familiar with my hardware but, one is yet
again left with that feeling of slight resentment that I've had to spend
considerable time Googling on, and researching aspects of PC hardware
against my will, instead of just being able to trust that it correctly
configures itself using bios "Auto" options :-)

regards, Richard
