DVD disc shows as CD capacity?

My internal (Phillips) DVD Writer drive, only allows recording to CD size
even when blank DVD inserted?
When trying to copy a DVD data disc using something like Alcohol 120% -
message says" not enough room." Copies fine to external Sony writer.
Windows XP is up to date.
Any ideas?

Is this a "combo" drive?, (no model # given)writes to cd's but can read
DVD's, if not perhaps the laser for the DVD is burnt out (dvd burners have
two lasers one for cd's the other for dvd's) can it read a already burned
dvd?

Thanks Mike - The model in Hardware says " Philips DVD+-RW DVD8701"
It plays DVD's written on another drive OK
It used to write OK but I have a feeling that something may have changed
when I was mucking about with drive letters (ran out of letters)- I had lots
of peripherals attached - not so many now!
Is there a switch somewhere I'm missing?
